What Navagraha puja is
In the jyotish tradition the kundli is read from the position of the nine grahas at the moment of birth. Each graha is understood to govern a distinct area of life, and where the kundli shows several of them unfavourably placed the difficulty is not attributed to any one alone. Navagraha Shanti Puja addresses the nine together.
The anushthan proceeds graha by graha. Each is worshipped with its own mantra and beej mantra, with the offering and the ahuti prescribed for it, in the traditional order. Ujjain’s long association with jyotish and with the reckoning of planetary positions is the reason families have customarily come here for grah shanti.
नवग्रह शांति पूजा
ज्योतिष शास्त्र के अनुसार जन्म के समय नौ ग्रहों की स्थिति से कुंडली का निर्माण होता है। प्रत्येक ग्रह जीवन के भिन्न-भिन्न क्षेत्रों से संबंधित माना गया है। जब कुंडली में एक से अधिक ग्रह प्रतिकूल स्थिति में हों, तब नवग्रह शांति पूजा के माध्यम से नौ ग्रहों की समवेत उपासना की जाती है।
इस अनुष्ठान में प्रत्येक ग्रह की पूजा उसके मंत्र एवं बीज मंत्र सहित, निर्धारित क्रम में की जाती है। उज्जैन का ज्योतिष एवं काल-गणना से प्राचीन संबंध रहा है, इसी कारण ग्रह शांति हेतु यहाँ आने की परंपरा है।

How the anushthan is performed
- Sankalp in the yajman’s own name and gotra.
- Ganesh pujan and the preliminary rites.
- Navagraha sthapana — the nine grahas established in the traditional arrangement.
- Mantra jaap for each graha in turn, with its beej mantra.
- Havan with the samidha and ahuti prescribed for each.
- Aarti and prasad to conclude.
The anushthan generally runs between two and three hours, within the temple’s puja window of 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Navagraha Shanti Puja is the worship of the nine grahas — Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu — through Vedic mantra and the beej mantra of each, performed where the kundli shows an imbalance across several grahas rather than one alone.
When is Navagraha puja recommended?
It is traditionally taken up where the difficulty is not attributed to a single graha, or where more than one graha is unfavourably placed in the kundli. An experienced jyotishi reads the kundli before the anushthan is settled on.
How long does the anushthan take?
Because each of the nine grahas is worshipped in turn, the puja generally runs between two and three hours.
Can Navagraha puja be done with another anushthan?
Yes. Many yajman have it alongside a Mangal Dosh or Kaal Sarp anushthan. The temple pandit ji will advise what suits your kundli and how the muhurat should be arranged.
