Mangal Dosh Nivaran Puja at Mangal Nath Mandir Ujjain

What Mangal Dosh means in the kundli

In jyotish, Mangal — Mars — is understood as the graha of energy, courage, decisiveness and, where badly placed, of friction. Its position in the kundli is read closely in matters of marriage, since Mangal is associated with the marital bond and with the temperament each partner brings to it.

When Mangal occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, the kundli is traditionally described as carrying Mangal dosh — also called Mangalik dosh or Kuja dosh. The tradition connects this placement with delay in marriage, with friction in married life, and with unsettledness in health and work. Whether the dosh applies at all, and with what strength, depends on the whole kundli and not on the house position alone, which is why the reading is left to an experienced jyotishi.

How the anushthan is performed

The puja is conducted at the temple by the pandit ji in the parampara maintained here. The vidhi ordinarily comprises:

  • Sankalp — the intention taken in the yajman’s own name and gotra.
  • Ganesh pujan and the preliminary rites that open any anushthan.
  • Mangal graha mantra jaap — recitation of the mantra of Mangal, including the beej mantra.
  • Havan with the ahuti prescribed for Mangal.
  • Offerings to Mangal Dev at the shrine, and abhishek of the Shiva linga within the complex.
  • Aarti and prasad, with which the anushthan is concluded.

The full vidhi generally takes between one and three hours. The muhurat is set at the time of booking, within the temple’s puja window of 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Please note. Puja and anushthan are matters of faith and shraddha, performed according to traditional Vedic vidhi. No cure, remedy or specific worldly outcome is claimed or guaranteed.

Booking a muhurat

To arrange the puja, call the temple on +91 9826690556 with the yajman’s full name and gotra, and the birth details if the anushthan follows from a kundli. The pandit ji will confirm the muhurat and tell you what, if anything, you need to bring. Booking ahead matters most on Tuesdays and around Bhaumvati Amavasya, when the temple is at its busiest.

Questions

Mangal Dosh Puja — frequently asked

What is Mangal Dosh?

In jyotish, Mangal dosh is said to arise when Mangal (Mars) occupies certain houses of the kundli — commonly the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th. It is also called Mangalik dosh or Kuja dosh, and is traditionally associated with delay or difficulty in marriage.

Why is Mangal Dosh Puja performed at Ujjain?

Mangal Nath Mandir in Ujjain is traditionally revered as the birthplace of Mangal Dev, following the account in the Matsya Purana. Ujjain also holds an old place in jyotish as the city from which planetary positions were reckoned, which is why families carrying a Manglik kundli have customarily come here.

How is the puja performed?

The anushthan is performed by the temple pandit ji in the yajman’s own name and gotra, with sankalp, Mangal graha mantra jaap, havan and the traditional offerings to Mangal Dev. The full vidhi generally runs between one and three hours.

Which day is best for Mangal Dosh Puja?

Tuesday (Mangalvar) is traditionally regarded as the day of Mangal Dev and is the customary choice. Bhaumvati Amavasya, when an Amavasya falls on a Tuesday, is considered especially significant.

Do I need to be present for the puja?

Being present is the traditional practice and is what most yajman prefer. Where a family cannot travel, the temple pandit ji can advise on how the anushthan is ordinarily arranged. Call the temple to discuss your situation.

What details are needed to book?

The yajman’s full name and gotra, and the birth details — date, time and place — if the puja follows from a kundli. Call +91 9826690556 and the pandit ji will set the muhurat.
